Located in the heart of Mt Eden, between the CBD and Mt Eden village; Botanica is central to the proposed inner city rail link, and in zone for Auckland Boys Grammar School. This modern example of sustainable living comes in the form of sixty-seven units. The ground floor and level one feature two and three bedroom terraces each with their own private garden courtyards, with the above three levels being single level apartments – featuring one, two and three bedroom options.
One of the key focuses of the project was to have a strong green element. This is carried out through vibrant gardens, the relationship between the indoors and outdoors and the use of raw materials. The project’s eco-driven architecture earned it the design working title of “uncooked muesli” – it’s healthy, raw and fruity.
These ‘uncooked’ materials include the use of off-form concrete and timber finishes, and what can be described as ‘tweedy’ interior materials; a balance of earthy tones and raw materials. The exterior features a galvanised steel frame which ‘pockets’ the protruding balconies, providing strength and utility; enabling climbing vines to ensue.
Comprising of ten percent affordable housing and designed to a high standard in terms of environmental and thermal considerations, Botanica also achieves a ‘Homestar 6’ rating.
