CAROS
GREY LYNN

Peddlethorp designed Caro’s original and very successful store in Parnell, which featured pine as primary material, referencing fine wine boxes. For MacKelvie St, this was translated into pine ply joinery, to suit the more gritty Grey Lynn environment.

The ground floor retail and stock space features an exotic glass fine wine room, set against the ’as found’ 1960s building carcass. The upper floor accommodates a wine tasting room and up to 60 guests.

The street presence was remodelled with a strip charred larch façade. This choice of material was not coincidental. Red wine barrels are typically ‘toasted’, a process where their insides are charred before the wine is aged. Like the use of pine in the joinery, and the barrel stave width pine linings of the tasting room, the charred larch demonstrates our approach to design which, through curiosity and research, add real depth of meaning to material selection and crafted assembly.
