Peddlethorp was asked to contribute a building to Smales Farm – a visionary business park on Auckland’s North Shore. We were briefed to enhance a working ethic of ‘health’, ‘wellbeing’ and ‘play’, while looking beyond the Smales Farm boundaries to integrate the local community.

The completed building delivered state-of-the-art sustainable design across two 1730m2 office floors with a similar area of ground floor retail and basement car parking space. During design we carefully analysed sunlight penetration, and this resulted in the cedar shade panels that ‘float’ in interlocking patterns on stainless steel mountings.
A true innovation for its time was the zonal control of air conditioning, allowing occupants to open windows without wasting energy – perfect for Auckland’s temperate environment. This feature presaged the strategies needed to achieve Greenstar 6, well before that regime was introduced to NZ.
