Lakes District Health Board’s brief for the redevelopment of Rotorua Hospital was to provide a modern healthcare facility designed to meet community for the following 20 years. The project encompassed the refurbishment of an existing Clinical Services Building and the construction of a new Inpatient Building accommodating Emergency, Ambulatory Care Centre, Medical and Surgical Wards, Coronary and Intensive Care Units, Theatres and Day Stay, CSSD, Outpatients and a new main entrance. The Hospital remained fully operational during all stages of the redevelopment.

The design theme, “Contemporary Tradition”, was conceived to comply with Rotorua’s Urban Design Principles. This was completed in close consultation with a local Iwi committee which reviewed each design aspect.
