Peddlethorp are proud to be working alongside Southern Cross Healthcare on the redevelopment of their Wellington Hospital campus. This major expansion aims to provide much-needed additional surgical capacity to the region and enable Southern Cross Healthcare to broaden the range of core hospital services currently delivered at the Newtown site to meet a wider range of healthcare needs.
Set for completion in late-2025, the first stage of the redevelopment involves the construction of a new four-level building adjacent to the existing hospital. This facility will house the Wellington region’s first day-stay orthopaedic surgery clinic along with consultation spaces for medical specialists and a radiology facility. The project also includes upgrades to some of the existing hospital theatres and services. Additionally, it will serve to expand on-site car parking and enhance the campus environment, creating a more cohesive and welcoming space for staff and visitors.
Here Peddlethorp’s research-based design approach has been applied towards the master planning and development of the overall design, architectural form, and material selections. The design references the historic brickworks that once stood on Mount Cook near to the site. Facades are articulated in form and scale to complement the residential scaled buildings along Hanson Street and the wider neighbourhood. The use of a brick finish on the curtainwall facades of the new buildings further complements the residential character and scale of the street.
