NATHAN RESIDENCES

Peddlethorp has been engaged by Generus Living Group to lead the master planning and design for a multi-stage luxury retirement living development.  Located in Parnell, Auckland and situated on Blind Low Vision NZ’s historic grounds, the existing site is characterised by the iconic heritage-listed Jubilee Building and surrounding buildings of similar forms with aesthetics derived from classical stone-masonry construction.

Client

Generus Living Group

Location

Parnell, Auckland

Completion Date

December 2023

The village’s first stage, The Nathan Residences, comprises 46 retirement apartments across five levels with commercial space at ground level.

Luxury apartments feature large, full height windows, high ceilings and generously proportioned covered balconies. Balconies are set back from the façade, creating a more elegant façade treatment while allowing privacy between units.

The design presents a sympathetic response to the existing category 1 listed buildings on and adjacent to the site, referencing features including classical proportions, materiality and colonnade. Exterior materials with a high degree of permanence and significance have been selected to complement and further enhance character. Subtle reference lines and visual height signals from the existing buildings inform the massing and setback initiatives applied to the new buildings. These buildings have been positioned with care and consideration for the existing built, adjacent open spaces, natural features and scale of the built form.

Early concept sketches of The Nathan Residences façade modulation depict the potential treatment of the vertical and horizontal elements in order to reduce the visual mass of the 5-storey development particularly when viewed from street level.
