This home enables the owners to ‘hunker down’ over the Taupo winter and expand in summer to accommodate three generations of family. The plan is arranged around a north-oriented open courtyard, where the main living area and two main bedrooms enjoy a view of the Lake and Ruapehu.

The balance of the house has bunk, bath and sunrooms, plus a garage, which are closed off during the quiet, cold months. To create a necessary remoteness in its subdivision setting, the house is clad in sawn vertical cedar battens with careful openings to views and sunshine. The finish is a rich rusty stain, the colour of local alpine flora and lichens.
